TSOAC reflects on 9/11
TWO SIDES OF A COIN PRODUCTIONS
Reflects on Sept.11th

In response to the tragedy of 9/11, Two sides of A Coin Productions, (Amy Coleman and Valerie Smaldone, co-creators) in cooperation with The Staten Island March of Dimes, have produced When I'm Gone, a song written and originally recorded by 1960's folk singer Phil Ochs. This new version is sung by Amy Coleman and Bob Stillman, both Broadway performers, with added poetry written and narrated by Broadcasting veteran Valerie Smaldone.

Background of this production

It seemed to Amy and Valerie, that in light of the events of September 11, the song's sentiment had taken on new meaning; perhaps the song's lyrics could be of some comfort during the long painful process of grieving that lay ahead. Amy and Valerie began talking about how frightening and difficult to comprehend the Sept. 11th attacks had to be for children. It was then that they decided to record Amy's version of When I'm Gone, and incorporate Valerie's narration of a poem that she wrote that speaks specifically to children. Bob Stillman, a friend and an accomplished singer/pianist, was invited to become part of the project.

Soon after, When I'm Gone was recorded at Up Against the Wall Studios. Two Sides of a Coin Productions is honored to share this song and poem as we reflect on September 11th, 2001. This recording is dedicated to those children who lost parents on that horrific day.

For young people everywhere affected by the events of September 11, we think that Brave Bart, an illustrated book created by The Trauma Institute in Michigan, is a sensitive and caring tool in the effort to help children as they struggle to come to terms with the traumatic experiences that took place last year. If you would like to order the book, please contact this web site for further information: www.tlcinstitute.org.

A second song, Home Of Heroes, was written and performed by a NYC police officer and his performing partners, Cameron and Joe Reina. The song is about the heroic rescue efforts following the collapse of the World Trade Towers. While in production for the song When I'm Gone , Two Sides of A Coin Productions and The Staten Island March of Dimes launched an art contest inviting the middle school students of Staten Island (the borough that had the highest percentage of lost firefighters in NYC) to create artwork responding to the question, what does heaven look like to you? Dozens of pictures were received and six were chosen as winners. The winning pictures are displayed below.
